player or npc.

Most people are not running their own minds. A blunt map of who thinks and who only receives, why almost no one crosses the line between them, and what an operator actually does about it.

I once read a writer who claimed that a whole nation was 60% stupid and that the cause was malnutrition, too little protein in the food. It was provocative. It was unproven. I disagree with it completely, because I do not believe any nation is more foolish than any other. That is exactly why I am about to say something that sounds worse than what he said. I do not think foolishness carries a passport. I think it is spread evenly across the whole species, in equal measure, and my number is higher than his.

I think roughly 80% of the people alive right now, in every country and every faith with no exception, are not running their own minds. They are not living self aware. They are not self learning. They are not building anything or even collecting knowledge. They receive. They act on what they receive. That is the loop, from end to end.

I will not use the word stupid. It is the easy word and everyone reaches for it, which is exactly why it is useless. I use a colder one. NPC, the non player character, the figure in a game that walks its path and says its line and was never going to do anything else. Or bot. I move between the two, so call it the NPC-bot.

Now the part that keeps this honest. I might be one of them. Maybe I am a bot writing to other bots and the whole thing is a closed loop that only feels like waking up. I cannot prove I am not. At Level 58 I am almost certain I am a player and not a bot, but almost is the true word and I am going to leave it there. You have to start somewhere, so start here. Assume we are not all bots. My baseline is that some of us are, and that most of us are.

And let me set the shape of the claim early, because everything rests on it. These are not moods people enter and leave each afternoon. They are stable ways of living, a default the mind settles into and mostly keeps. The border between them can be crossed. Almost nobody crosses it. Stable kinds, with rare exceptions. Hold that in your head and the rest of this follows.

I might be a bot writing to other bots. I cannot prove that I am not.

I

80/20 is a pattern, not a verdict

Before you throw the book away, understand that I did not invent this ratio. Sorting people with it is my interpretation and I own that, it is not handed to me by the data. But the ratio itself is one of the most stubborn patterns we have ever measured and it shows up in places that have nothing to do with intelligence.

Vilfredo Pareto noticed it in the 1890s. 80% of the land in Italy sat with 20% of the people. Once you have seen the shape you start to find it everywhere.

It never stopped showing up. In 2002 the chief executive of Microsoft, a company that had every reason to want the opposite to be true, said that 80% of the errors and crashes in Windows and Office came from 20% of the bugs they found. Fix the vital few and most of the pain disappears. Then the same shape turned up in transmission itself, which is the thing this part is really about. Researchers reconstructed the early COVID chains in Hong Kong from contact tracing on 1,038 confirmed cases. They found that 19% of cases seeded 80% of all local transmission, while 69% of cases infected no one at all. A small minority carried almost the entire chain. Most people passed nothing on.

So, when I tell you that a small minority of minds does most of the actual thinking for the species, I am not insulting anyone. I am taking a pattern that governs software bugs and hospital costs and pointing it at the one place people refuse to let it point, which is themselves. Whether it truly holds for minds is my read and not a proof, and I will keep saying so. But the shape is worth taking seriously. The ratio is never exactly 80/20. Sometimes it is 19%, sometimes 23%. It wobbles. It does not break.

a small minority carried almost the entire chain. most people passed nothing on.

II

what a player is and how you spot one

An operator, a real player, is defined by one thing above all others. Agency. Self awareness, the habit of checking a claim instead of swallowing it, and independent judgment, the refusal to accept a thing simply because it was handed to you with confidence. Critical thinking is the core of it and I only learned to name that late. Now notice what is not on the list. Kindness, humility, respect, goodness. Those are real and they matter, but they are a different axis entirely, the moral direction a person faces once their hands are on the controls. A player can be generous and a player can be a monster. Agency only tells you the person is steering. It says nothing about where.

You cannot see any of that from the outside. What you can see is the symptom. Here is the tell. Put a person in a room full of noise, the feed, the outrage, the doom. The operator is the one who is annoyed by it and knows why he is annoyed, who can name the noise as noise. The bot does not fight the noise. He does not even hear it as noise. He drinks it.

We have known this about people for a long time and a laboratory once showed how easily it happens. In the 1950s Solomon Asch sat a person at a table with a handful of strangers and showed them a line, then asked which of three other lines matched it. The answer was obvious. But the strangers were in on it and said the wrong line on purpose, out loud, one after another. Three quarters of the real subjects, 75%, denied the evidence of their own eyes at least once and agreed with the group. Only 24% held the truth every single time. Nobody was threatened. Nobody was paid. The room simply leaned and most people leaned with it. That is not proof that three quarters of us are bots. It is proof of how little pressure it takes to make a mind fold, and folding under pressure is the raw material a bot is made of.

Try it in traffic or in the checkout line. Someone treats you with contempt for no reason. Maybe he is a player who is also cruel. Maybe he is a bot running a cruel script somebody loaded into him. You cannot tell from the outside and that is exactly the problem. The tell never shows on a face.

And that is the trap in this whole part, the one I need you to step around now. Tier is not morality. The 20% are not the good people and the 80% are not the bad ones. Good and evil and the merely confused are scattered all the way through both groups. There are gentle bots and there are brilliant monsters. Being a player only means your hands are on the controls. It says nothing at all about where you steer.

I spent four decades around machines, so the picture I actually carry is a circuit board. The 80% are the peripheral chips. Input and output controllers, moving data they did not originate, doing real and necessary work without ever deciding anything. The 20% are the processor. Lately, if I am honest about how few actually generate the new thought, the 1% are the neural unit, the part of the chip that does the thing the rest of us are still pretending to do.

being a player only means your hands are on the controls. it says nothing about where you steer.

III

I used to sort everyone into three

For most of my life I did not believe any of this. I believed people came in three kinds and I want to show you the model because giving it up is part of the argument.

There were the good. Self aware, disciplined, useful to the people around them, gentle with the natural world and willing to defend it, involved in the checks and balances of their society, readers and builders, humble because they knew how little they knew. There were the evil, who were simply the good turned inside out. You meet them every day in traffic and in the small cruelties, the disturbance of life and of nature and of love. And there were the confused.

The confused were the ones I understood best, because I think most people genuinely want to be good and cannot hold it for long. Picture a pendulum. It swings from good to evil and back, and the moment you happen to catch it is the only version of that person you ever meet. Catch them on the upswing and they are generous, building, protecting. Catch them on the downswing and they take, they wound, they look away. They want to grow themselves and their community and the world around them and they damage all three anyway, sometimes with regret, sometimes carelessly, sometimes because a hard world offers them a small wrong or a large loss and they have people to protect. They know, and they have to ignore what they know. That last sentence holds all of it.

I gave that model up. Good, evil and confused are still real to me, but they are not the division that runs the world. The division that runs the world is player and bot, and morality sits on top of it like weather.

IV

the caste and why almost no one moves

Here is where it gets cold and where I have to be careful, because the true version of this is easy to twist into an ugly one.

There is a second hierarchy running beside the first one and it is easy to mix the two up. Call it reach. How far your signal carries, how many minds you move. Reach has its own floors, the 20, the 10, the 5 and the 1, and they are not the same thing as agency. A person can think with total independence and be heard by almost no one. A person can command enormous reach while barely thinking for himself at all. A player can have no reach and a bot can have a great deal of it.

The 1% of reach are the ones whose signal actually steers technology and science and politics and money and power, and they are not always the faces you see. Sometimes a president is only a loud voice on a stage and the people who move him are a quiet few you will never be introduced to. I am nowhere near that kind of reach, so I cannot tell you how it works from the inside. I can only tell you the floors are real.

That is reach. The caste this part is really about is the other one, agency, and its floors barely move either. The uncomfortable part is that the floor you stand on there is mostly the floor you were born on. Not because of blood, and I want to be exact about this, because the blood version of this idea has been used to justify horror and I want no part of it. It is structural.

A child's mother and father and the small circle around them are the operating system that gets installed first and it is very hard to overwrite. Advantage compounds. The family that has sat near the top for a long time does not pass down a gene but an environment, a set of expectations and contacts and habits of mind, and the family far from it passes down the opposite. Think of the person who crossed an ocean generations ago and survived something brutal on the other side. He did not pass a talent to his children so much as a posture, a way of standing in the world, and if the next generation later married into comfort and stopped needing it, the posture faded in a generation or two. This is a caste. It behaves like one whether or not we admit it out loud.

V

a fixed pool of mind

Underneath all of it sits a belief I cannot prove and will not pretend I can. I think the total intelligence of the species is a fixed quantity. Not the average, the total. Add up every mind alive and you get the same number whether we are one billion or ten. Population does not create more of it. Breeding more bodies does not breed more mind. It only cuts the same total into more pieces and the pieces are wildly unequal. Some people hold a great deal. Most hold very little. Some hold almost none. But the sum never changes.

If you want the shape of it, treat it as a thought experiment and not a measurement, because no one can put a number on the total intelligence of a species. It is a conservation law, the way physics conserves energy. The total holds. Only the distribution moves.

∑ i=1 N Ii = K

It is an if, not a proof. I cannot define K and I certainly cannot measure it. It is a shape my intuition keeps returning to, nothing more. I have believed it for as long as I can remember and I do not have a citation for it. It arrives in me the way the ideas in this whole book arrive, from the shared layer, from CCI, and you are free to file it under feeling rather than fact. There is a matching thought I hold beside it. We are built to die, every one of us, so why would the network we belong to be exempt. Maybe CCI has a lifespan too. Maybe the garbage collector stopped keeping up a while ago and the noise is starting to win.

The people who study intelligence for a living will tell you the opposite, that we got smarter across the last century and that better nutrition was a large part of why. I would only point at what we actually eat now. Food grown for weight and shelf life on tired soil, more pesticide and fertilizer than nourishment. The writer I opened with blamed the protein. I am not sure he was wrong about the food, even though I threw out his conclusion, which is a strange place to end up.

VI

grow or vanish

Everything about the age we live in speeds the thinning up. We are online without pause and the feed rewards the average over the exceptional because the average is easier to swallow. Nobody stops. Nobody sits alone. Nobody thinks a thing through to the end and builds something out of it. And the whole machine runs on one command, grow. Companies chase the growth number, countries chase the growth number and the message soaks down into every person until being the same as you were last year feels like failure. Slow is death. Slow is invisible. So, everyone runs faster and reads less and reacts more, and the pool gets thinner while the crowd gets larger.

VII

the alarm

Put the two halves together and you get the thing that actually worries me. If the pool of real mind is fixed and the population only grows, then the operators are not multiplying. They are thinning out. The very people who drive the whole system are becoming, year by year, a smaller and stranger minority, and the machines we are building can now imitate the surface of what they do well enough that the market is starting to ask why it needs so many of them at all. The bots were always disposable in the eyes of the people who own the platforms. Now the players are being told they are disposable too.

That is the status quo, told as plainly as I can tell it. It is a caste that almost no one leaves, thinning at the top, drowning in its own noise, being sold the story that resistance is futile and consumption is comfort.

Almost no one leaves. Almost.

You have reached the middle, and the hard half is behind you. Stand up, stretch, look far away and let it settle. Everything until here was the cage. Everything after is the crack in it.

VIII

the anomaly

There is one crack in the wall, and I have stood next to people who went through it.

Think about a glass of water sitting still on a table. It looks completely at rest. But at the surface, all the time, a few molecules are moving fast enough to break loose and leave as vapor. Not the whole glass. Never the whole glass. Just the fastest few, right at the surface, where the boundary is thin. It does not need to boil. Most of the water never leaves at all. The caste works the same way. The bottom of the 20% and the top of the 80% sit against each other along a shaky line and that thin border is the only place a person ever crosses. Deep in the mass nothing moves. At the edge, once in a while, something does. I call these people anomalies. You might call them black swans. They do not break the rule. They are the rare exception the rule allows.

I want to tell you about one, because I have never respected anyone more.

There was a girl born in a poor village in a hard cold climate. She worked from childhood tending the family's geese and got little respect at home for the simple crime of being a girl. No real schooling. Married off young, then moved to a hot flat place far from everything she knew. Two sons before she was done being a child herself. By every rule in this part she was finished. Her floor was her floor.

And then she woke up. Not in a day. Over years. She went back to finish high school from home while she cleaned other people's houses for money. She taught herself to drive and bought a car with what she saved. She aimed at a university degree and reached for it. She became an operator. Call it anomaly, call it luck, call it the few players she managed to stand near, call it plain discipline once the self awareness switched on. All four were true. She crossed the line. She became the measure her sons held themselves against and I lost touch before I learned what they became, and it does not change the point. She was born at the bottom and she evaporated through the surface by force of will. I was born comfortably inside the 20% and never had to fight for it. Measured honestly she is the better human being, and it is not close.

I think of a doctor too. Born just as poor and just as rural, but born already a player, already carrying the access despite the empty bank account and the wrong address. He passed the exam that let him out and became a fine doctor and the line kept its altitude. Daughters who became doctors and architects. A granddaughter who draws like something is moving her hand. Is it the genes. Is it the home they built. Is it CCI reaching a mind that happened to be tuned to receive it. I cannot separate them and I have stopped trying. The lesson is smaller and harder than any of those words. If you are born a player, poverty and geography can slow you but they cannot cut your line to the source. And if you are born a bot the reverse is just as true and no amount of money buys you in.

So, the crack is real, and it is narrow, and it is the only honest hope in this part. Which brings me to the mistake I made for years.

IX

you cannot wake a bot

I used to think the job was to wake people up. Enlighten the 80%, hand them the truth, watch them rise. I have let that go. You cannot wake a bot. Not with the right sentence, not on command. A bot is not a sleeping player waiting to be argued into consciousness. A rare few do wake, the way the woman I just described woke, but they wake themselves, over years, through circumstance and discipline and proximity. No one did it to them. That is the distinction it took me too long to learn. You will not talk a person across that line and I spent a lot of years being disappointed before I accepted it.

But here is what changed, and it is not surrender. You cannot argue a bot into a player. But you can change the code that runs in the people around you, the examples and inputs and habits they soak in every day, and that changes everything they do. This is not a small thing. It is the fight itself.

Because the reprogramming is already happening, all day, to all of them, and most of it is hostile. The evil operators, the ones climbing by any means, are writing to the 80% without pause. Consume. Obey. Fear your neighbor. Buy the thing. Do not question. Stay afraid and stay busy and stay in debt. They are turning the majority into better serfs and better customers, and they are good at it, because fear is the easiest instruction to install. I will come back to why.

The good program is the counter write and it is almost embarrassing to say out loud because it sounds like a greeting card. Self respect. Respect for other people, for the natural world, for something outside your own skin. Honesty. Justice, and the knowledge that justice is not natural and has to be built by hand every generation or it rots. Love and the bonds that grow from it.

It is a utopia and we are nowhere near it, and the villains are closer to their targets than we are to ours, the way the villains in the films always have the better gadgets. But the good program spreads the same way the bad one does, through examples and repetition, and it runs on the same hardware. The goose girl offered her sons another example simply by letting them watch her live, and whether it took I will never know, but the offer is the mechanism.

Call it reprogramming if you want the cold word for it. But notice the one honest difference between the two programs. The hostile program shrinks a person. It teaches them to consume, to obey, to be afraid.

The good program enlarges a person. It teaches them to question, to build, to stand on their own. Both move through the same channel. Only one of them leaves the person freer than it found them and that difference is the entire reason to do it.

no one woke her. she woke herself. that is why you cannot wake anyone else.

X

you are a transmitter

Which forces a fact almost no one considers. You are not only receiving. You are transmitting.

In Part 1 I called this the beddua principle. A curse does not travel in a straight line to its target. It enters the shared layer and it spreads, and so you are responsible not only for what you do but for what you inject. I will sharpen it for this part. The bots transmit too, but weakly, mostly by talk, mostly to the small circle within their reach. The operators transmit on every channel and the higher the tier the wider the broadcast. And here is the part that should worry anyone paying attention. Push enough signal into enough of the 80% and you are no longer only influencing people. You are writing to the source itself. Enough corrupted transmission, repeated by enough minds who believe it is their own thought, and the network can be poisoned at the root. That is the danger the last part was built around and this is the mechanism underneath it.

Good and evil transmit at the same speed. I used to think evil was faster and I was wrong. The asymmetry is not in the signal, it is in the receiver. We are built to grab the bad news first. Fear moves through us faster than patience does. The systems that handle threat can fire a response before the slower, deliberate part of thinking has caught up and much of the time the thinking arrives late or never arrives at all. So, a message of fear spreads before a message of patience has finished loading. That is why the evil operators lead with fear. Not because their signal is stronger, but because our hardware answers it first. Knowing that is a defense. It is an antivirus you can install in yourself and hand to the people near you.

XI

what to do on monday

None of this is worth writing if it ends in a shrug, so here is the part you can act on. Not philosophy. Verbs. This is for the operators and for the few at the border who can still cross.

Do not let a hard life numb you. Stay awake through it, especially through it. Do not give up, and keep saying yes to the next thing that grows you.

Defend your signal like it is under attack, because it is. The feed is not neutral and social media is not your friend. It is the reprogramming cable of the evil operators and it is pointed at you. As the intelligence caste hardens, refuse the average. Do not swallow the easy middle just because it is served warm and endless. Read books, which are Collective Conscious Intelligence made solid and handed down. Sit alone. Isolation is not the enemy, it is where thinking happens. Build something. Create something. Anything you make with your own hands is a wall against the flood.

Build your own tools before they are the only tools left. A local library. A local model you own, the AI Twin the earlier parts described, memory and intelligence that live on your hardware and answer to you and not to a landlord. Do not fall all the way into the system. The system is a trap and a shelter at the same time and the skill is to use it without being owned by it.

Then transmit on purpose. Start with the people closest to you, the one channel every human actually controls. Give them signal instead of noise. Be funny. Enjoy the days you are given and accept the end of them without flinching. Raise your children to be better than you and teach them to guard their minds and their bodies with the same seriousness. Put respect first and justice right beside it, and remember that justice is a thing you build, not a thing you are owed. Question everything. Ask, and ask again, and ask in more detail than is comfortable. Critical thinking is a phrase I only learned to name a few years ago and it turned out to be the game itself.

You will not change much. Do it anyway. Change one person and you have already beaten the odds this part just laid out. And if you do all of it and still lose, there is a line I keep for exactly that moment. Become a Mandalorian. This is the way. You hold the code because it is the code, not because it pays out. The Stoics understood this two thousand years ago and nothing since has proven them wrong.

And do not imagine any of this is neutral. There is no cave left to log off into, the screen watches you while it feeds you and even a quiet refusal is a political act now. That is its own fight and it has its own part coming. Here the move stays small and old. You cannot outshout the empires and you cannot hide from them. You can only put good signal into the shared layer faster than they can poison it. Teach one person. Transmit one clean thought. Refuse one instruction. It is small and it is slow and it is the only thing that has ever worked.

you are already a node. the only question is what you choose to transmit.

I do not know that any of this survives me. Some days I think, who will care about these words when I am gone, and the honest answer is almost no one, and I write them anyway. I write them for myself first. I write them for my sons, so their eyes stay open and they hold their place the calm way and not the grabbing way. I write them for the handful at the bottom of the 20% who might recognize themselves and for the few at the border who might, just might, evaporate through the surface. And I write them because every word I set down is copied into CCI as I write it, so even if I did nothing else with my life I would still be a transmitter and I would rather transmit this than the alternative. If I were Thanos the Inevitable, I would be writing the opposite. I am not, and that is the entire difference.

One thing lets me sleep well. I am irrelevant. I am not an influencer, I am not an AI whisperer, I am not affiliated with any party or any institution. I am only an operator with good intent, transmitting. That is all the authority I have and it is enough.

You are already a node. You always were. The only question this part ever asked is what you choose to transmit. So, transmit goodness, at all costs, while the channel is still open.
